Do you ever start a new release by an author you’ve never read before and before you’ve even finished the book, you find yourself ordering their entire back catalogue? I’ve done this countless times. And it matters little that my “to be read” pile is towering over me. I have to have every single book that author has ever written. A while back it was Tessa Hadley. Have you read her books yet? I adore her. My first was Late in the Day and I now have all of her others in my own personal library.
A few years earlier it was Fredrik Backman and Anne Tyler. Also, two authors I adore. And most recently, Haruki Murakami. What sort of rock have I been under not to have dived into one of his books until about six months ago? His writing is quirky, dry-witted, inspired, and brilliantly translated.
But of course, this sometimes causes an issue (I think so anyway) with reading a book and then discovering it’s part of a series and I’ve just read book four before reading books one, two, and three. This happened with Colm Toibin. It’s okay though, I picked up the rest of his books and I’m now all caught up, although somewhat confused with timelines at certain points (again, all sorted now). But again, he is another brilliant author.
If you’re out there, somewhere, reading this blog, please drop me a line to let me know which back catalogues you’ve purchased. You never know, it might be the next back catalogue that I purchase!
